BLAIR AND CO. GIMBALLED MARINE BAROMETER WITH SYMPIESOMETER

This fine and decorative rosewood marine barometer originated in Cardiff, England (a seaport town on the Bristol Channel) in the mid-19th Century and no doubt was used on one of the many merchant ships which plied those waters. The gimbals allow the barometer to remain upright in rough seas.

This instrument is of the highest quality, featuring a rosewood veneered case, carved mouldings and ivory scales. It also has a particularly rare sympiesometer (alternative weather monitoring instrument) encased under bevelled glass in the midsection. There is a screw-up type boxwood cistern in the base for portability. Overall length is 39 inches.

Examples of this quality and complexity have become exceedingly scarce.
